Fairfield West accident: Pedestrian was hit by a car and thrown into the air while crossing a busy Sydney street
A man crossing a busy main road in western Sydney was hit by a car and thrown into the air as CCTV footage captured the incident.
Paramedics were called to the intersection of Smithfield Rd and Polding St in Fairfield West at 7.20pm on Thursday following reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian, police said.
The video shows the man waiting on the side of the road, rather than at a designated intersection, before walking out as traffic appears to slow and come to a stop.
The 41-year-old man makes it across the nearest lane, but as he steps out from behind a stationary car into the opposite lane, a vehicle comes towards him.
He then tries to run across the road when the car brakes, but is hit and thrown into the air with a rollover. He then lands on the asphalt in front of another car.

‘OhOfficers from the Fairfield City Police Area Command arrived and found the man with serious head injuries “was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics,” police said.
The man was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition but is now in a serious but stable condition.
“The driver, a 62-year-old man, was not injured and was taken to Fairfield Hospital for mandatory tests.”
At least three ambulances and three patrol cars were dispatched to the scene and police have established a crime scene.

Police are investigating the accident and the driver was taken to hospital for a mandatory check-up
Passers-by and drivers gathered on the side of the road as detectives searched the area for evidence next to the man’s pair of running shoes, which had been thrown onto the blacktop.
“The investigation into the circumstances of the accident has begun,” the police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
