“I don’t like to get up early in the morning to go running, but I do it so I can start my day with a conquest,” says P. F. Chang’s CEO Damola Adamolekun. Set high expectations: “If you set a bar that is high, people will step up,” Adamolekun said.
His parents did it early on with the school grades that helped him get into the Ivy League, and his football coach did it by telling him he “was going to be the next Eddie,” in reference to a great receiver who came before him. “I wanted to prove him right,” said Adamolekun. “That was a skill I picked up from Coach.”
Create a compound effect : Leave it to an investor to bring the idea of “compound effect” into leadership. One of the advantages to setting the bar high is that your team will not only meet expectations but also strive to exceed them. “If somebody has a high bar and knows what’s expected of them, and they feel supported, they’ll even surprise themselves,” offered Adamolekun. “And they’ll build confidence and know that they can do more and better as they go forward. It will compound.
