Everton have activated Abdoulaye Doucoure’s one-year contract extension ahead of the crucial final game of the season against Bournemouth.
Sean Dyche’s side, who have a slender two-points lead over relegation rivals Leicester and Leeds going into the final weekend, can secure their Premier League safety with a win over fellow traveling Cherries at Goodison Park on Sunday.
Although their place in the top flight is not yet assured, Everton confirmed on Tuesday that Doucoure will remain at the club until June 2024, with his contract initially expiring at the end of the season.
The Mali international has become a key figure in Dyche’s fight against relegation, contributing four goals and two assists since March.
The hardworking midfielder benefited from a more advanced role under Dyche, playing in the engine room alongside defenders Idrissa Gueye and Amadou Onana.

His brace in the first half against Brighton two weeks ago helped the Toffees to a crucial 5-1 win at the Amex.
Doucoure has made 94 appearances since joining from Watford for £20million in 2020, scoring nine goals in total.
The 30-year-old star fell out of favor during Frank Lampard’s tenure at the club but has since shown Everton’s board he is worthy of an extra season at Goodison Park.
Doucoure previously played for the Hornets and has made 24 top-flight appearances in each of the last seven Premier League seasons.
