A 95-year-old man with dementia is fighting for his life after being verbally abused by police at a nursing home.
Clare Nowland, a mother of eight, was found with a knife by staff at Yallambee Lodge near Cooma in southern New South Wales on Wednesday.
Nursing home workers then called the police before officers attempted to disarm the great-grandmother.
She was then shocked with an electric baton and taken to Cooma District Hospital, where her distraught family stayed at her bedside.
A NSW Police spokesman said an investigation into a critical incident had been launched.
The news came as a shock to Ms Nowland, who has worked at a charity shop for years to help those in need.

“This investigation is subject to independent verification.” “No further details are available at this time,” said a NSW Police spokesman.
Ms. Nowland was closely involved in her community and was a member of Cooma Golf Club and St. Patrick’s Parish.
Former St Patrick’s vicar Mick MacAndrew said the family has been involved for generations.
“They were a very devoted family here, going back to their own parents,” Father MacAndrew said.
“She was at the daily mass when she was fine before going to Yallambee (Lodge).”
Ms. Nowland also worked in St. Vincent de Paul for several years.
“She was a member of St. Vincent’s de Paul in Cooma and helped out at school when her children were there,” Father MacAndrew said.
Ms Nowland moved into the care home five years ago after the loss of her husband and her ability to take care of herself.
The Snowy Monaro Regional Council, which runs the nursing home, said staff complied with procedure.
The incident will be reported to the Commission for Quality and Safety in Elderly Care.
