Jamie Carragher insists Man City must aim to ‘dominate Europe’ after 4-0 win over Real Madrid.

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Manchester City shouldn’t just settle for a single Champions League title, but must also set their sights on dominance in European football.

Pep Guardiola’s team secured their ticket to the second Champions League final on Wednesday evening with a commanding 4-0 win over defending champions and record winners Real Madrid and won 5-1 overall.

Bernardo Silva – who has been linked with a move this summer – scored twice in the first half before an Eder Militao own goal and Julian Alvarez strike sealed City’s win.

The club’s quest for their first European title is well documented, although they now have a chance to end that wait when they meet Inter Milan in Istanbul on June 10, who won the other semi-final on Tuesday.

However, Carragher insisted that given the quality of their squad of players and coaches, Manchester City should look beyond this summer and repeat Liverpool’s 1976–84 performances and win several trophies.

Carragher explained that the Citizens are already “among the best” in the history of English football and are aiming for a fourth straight Premier League win next season

“There is only one English team that has dominated Europe and that is Liverpool in the late 70s and early 80s,” said the former Reds and England defender on CBS Sports Golazo.

“Man City are on the verge of winning their third league title very soon but nobody has ever managed four so they’re up there with the absolute best.”

“Manchester United have won three in a row on a couple of occasions but they’ve never dominated Europe – they’ve won a Champions League and City have yet to win the Champions League but considering how good they could get, they should be it.” I’m trying to win the first Champions League in a few weeks.

“But for the quality they have in terms of manager, on the pitch and their finances – they can virtually buy whoever they want – they have to try to dominate Europe.”

Los Blancos have been the dominant force in Europe for the past decade, winning five of their last nine competitions but were overwhelmed by Premier League leaders at the Etihad on Wednesday night.

Guardiola has made tactical changes this season following the introduction of Erling Haaland after winning the Premier League without a recognized striker last season.

Although Haaland has broken several goal-scoring records, there was criticism of his ability to practice the ball early in his City tenure and Thierry Henry attributed his rapid integration into the club system to his manager.

“I think listen, what Pep Guardiola does is he improves players,” claimed the Arsenal and France legend.

“I thought I was reasonably ok in football and when I got to Barcelona he deprogrammed me to reprogram me to a certain understanding of the game.”

“Now if this team wins the treble, at the end of the day the way they do it depends on what points they will get at the end of the season, which they usually do, with Haaland or not.” But now with Haaland they are a team that can win the treble.

“How good can they be? The sky is the limit.’

Guardiola’s side have three Premier League games left and need just three points to be crowned winners for a third consecutive season before they meet Manchester United in the FA Cup final on June 3 and that Triple can secure.
