Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen channeled Randy Johnson with a fatal pitch before Wednesday’s game against the Oakland Athletics.
Gallen was preparing for the last duel of the three-game series between the two teams when he killed a bird with an unfortunate throw.
While warming up in the outfield, Gallen threw a curveball that hit a bird in mid-flight, apparently killing the animal.
The throw was captured by cameras for Diamondbacks broadcaster Bally Sports Arizona.
Footage shows Gallen throwing the pitch before accidentally hitting the bird flying in front of the catcher.

In the clip, the bird immediately falls to the ground and, according to Bally Sports, did not survive.
Johnson killed a bird during a spring training game in 2001. When he threw a pitch against the San Francisco Giants, a bird crossed home plate and was crushed by baseball.
Johnson won his third Cy Young Award in the National League that season in 2001, posting a 2.32 ERA over 249.2 innings.
Gallen’s incident came a day before the anniversary of Johnson delivering a perfect game for Arizona against the Atlanta Braves in 2004.
Gallen had a great start to the 2023 season, owning a 2.35 ERA over 57.1 innings with 70 strikeouts on eight walks.
Despite a deadly start to the game, the Diamondbacks won the series’ deciding final.
