Seven children are fighting for their lives after a horrific bus accident west of Melbourne, while several students are left with partial or total amputations in hospital.
The accident happened on Tuesday afternoon at the corner of Exford and Murphys Rd in Eynesbury, west of Melbourne’s central business district.
At 3:40 p.m. rescue workers were called to the scene of the accident.
According to Victoria Police, the bus was driving from Exford Primary School, which is just 900 meters from the scene of the accident, when a lorry struck the vehicle from behind.
The bus rolled over on its side as a result of the collision.
At the time, 45 children aged between five and eleven from Exford Primary School were on the bus, with ten students suffering multiple and traumatic injuries.
“This includes the partial and total amputation of weapons,” said Bernadette McDonald, chief executive of the Royal Children’s Hospital, at a news conference.
“We have admitted seven patients, one of whom is currently in our intensive care unit.” The children are between five and eleven years old.

Many students in the hospital will have to undergo surgery in the coming days.

The male bus driver suffered minor injuries.
Passers-by helped extricate some of the children from the overturned vehicle before emergency services arrived.
Six people were trapped in the devastated rubble but were eventually rescued by firefighters and SES employees.
