Fourteen months into Russia’s wider war on Ukraine, separatist troops still aren’t protecting their tanks from attacks by $500 drones. In the span of just three days starting on Wednesday, drone operators with the Ukrainian 59th Mechanized Brigade knocked out no fewer than four T-72 and T-80 tanks apparently belonging to Ukrainian separatists fighting under Russian command.

The back-to-back drone strikes underscore the deadly effectiveness of the inexpensive racing drones that Ukrainian— and Russian—forces have transformed into tiny, inexpensive missiles. They’re also a reminder that bad leadership gets soldiers killed and equipment wrecked. After the first couple of losses, any competent commander would stop sending tanks into the same kill zone.
