Alabama got a far more distinctive performance from its star, advancing into the Sweet Sixteen when they defeated Maryland 73-51 on Saturday night.
The Crimson Tide led by just 28-23 after a poor first half, but rounded out in form in the final 20 minutes to comfortably advance to the next stage of the tournament.
Key to the win was Brandon Miller, the team’s top scorer this season and a likely lottery pick in the next NBA draft, who surprisingly remained scoreless in the Tide’s first-round win over Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
According to his coach Nate Oats, Miller struggled with a groin injury that game but looked back at his best against Maryland, scoring 19 points and catching seven rebounds in the later blowout.
Teammate Jahvon Quinerly led all scorers with 22 points while Julian Reese had a team high of 14.
Alabama meets San Diego State in next week’s Sweet Sixteen.
