Five teenage girls have been arrested in Iran after dancing without a headscarf to a Selena Gomez song.
The Islamic Republic enforces strict laws regarding dancing and other forms of public entertainment, especially for women.
A short video shows the western-clad teenagers moving to “Calm Down,” a remix of Nigerian singer Rema and pop star Gomez’s Afrobeats hit.
The clip was shot in the western Tehran city of Ekbatan, coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8, and was described as an act of resistance to the Iranian regime.
Gomez shared the video and news of her incarceration on her Instagram page.

Gomez shared the video and news of her incarceration on her Instagram page
She wrote: “To these young women and all women in Iran who continue to boldly demand fundamental change, please know that your strength is inspirational.”
It comes after journalist and filmmaker Maziar Bahari wrote online: “This is a common scene in most cities around the world. But in Iran it is an act of defiance.”
After the clip made the rounds, the Twitter account Shahrak-e Ekbatan reported that the girls’ dance teacher, surnamed Mitra, was interrogated.
The account, which covers Neighborhood News, also reported that the girls received a “warning” over the video.
The Iranian press has since reported that the girls were arrested after the stunt.
Mass protests have erupted in the country for the past six months since the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman who was arrested for allegedly violating the strict dress code for women.
The violence that ensued claimed hundreds of lives, including dozens of security forces, and led to further arrests of thousands.
