An Australian who was planning a surprise holiday with a friend has been humiliated online after mistakenly booking flights to the wrong country.
Sophie Alice was delighted when Ben Kennedy flew halfway across the world to visit her and then announced he had booked them a bonus trip last weekend.
Ben had intended to kidnap Sophie to the Hungarian capital, Budapest, but mistakenly bought tickets for the Romanian capital of the same name, Bucharest – nearly 900km away.
Deciding to make the best of the situation, the couple produced a TikTok video titled, “When you thought you booked flights to Budapest.”
In the video, which has garnered over four million views, Sophie can be seen on the tarmac as she is about to board a RyanAir plane bound for Romania.

When asked repeatedly online if they had made the trip, Sophie replied, “Yes we went, of course we went, it was great.”
“It was amazing, I have a lot of videos to show from Romania, so follow me and you will see. But yes, absolutely brilliant, loved it.’
The couple decided to shed light on the situation with a TikTok video titled “When you thought you booked flights to Budapest.”
Highlights Sophie shared online included a trip to Bran Castle – often referred to as Dracula’s Castle – in Transylvania, a delicious meal and attending a concert.
Many commentators said it was a good mistake to accidentally go to Bucharest instead of Budapest.
“Honestly, Bucharest is nicer than Budapest,” said one.
“Budapest is overrated and nobody speaks English,” agreed another.
“Bucharest is one of the wildest party places that is totally underrated,” said a third.
Others said they know people who have made similar travel mistakes with sound-like destinations.
“My boyfriend and I flew to Budapest last year, he flew a day ahead of me and lost his flight for the same reason. He lined up for Bucharest,” she wrote.
‘My mother almost did that. Trying to buy flights to San Diego, California almost ended up in Santiago, Chile,” wrote another.

“It happened to us on Valentine’s Day while we were waiting for Budapest in the Bucharest line. We never got away with it,” commented a third.
“Lol… my husband thought he booked a flight to the Bahamas and after 2 hours discovered he was going to Bermuda instead! You are not alone!’ a fourth wrote.
The mishap comes just weeks after a New Yorker made the mistake of booking a flight to Sidney, Montana instead of Sydney, Australia.
Kingsley Burnett had chosen to fly to the airport using the code SDY instead of SYD.
“I saw the little plane with about 9 passengers and I wondered how that’s going to get me to Australia,” he told the New York Post.
“That’s when I realized the mistake I had made.”
