Australians split on rental listing for ‘one bedroom apartment’ built under house: ‘I’d rather be homeless thanks’

Australians are divided over a rental unit advertised as a “one bedroom apartment” located under a house.
The “fully furnished one bedroom apartment” in Woolloongabba, south Brisbane, was advertised at $350 a week, all bills included.
Pictures of the property posted to Facebook Marketplace show what appears to be a converted area under a house next to a garage.
The current tenant, who said he wants to end his lease, said the “beautiful” property is “a few minutes’ walk from Woolloongabba Stadium”.

The current tenant said the “beautiful” property is “walking distance from Woolloongabba Stadium”.
“It is perfect for a single person or a couple. It has everything you could wish for. You will receive this apartment fully furnished with all bills,” he wrote in the listing.
‘You have the right to the back yard and front porch where you can park two cars if needed… The garage has a remote controlled gate. You only need your clothes to come and settle here.’
The listing drew mixed reactions from social media users.
One claimed they would “rather be homeless” than live in the property, while another attacked the homeowners.
‘I can’t believe these landlords, absolutely disgusting!’ said one.
“Crawling crawlies, mildew and mold are definitely going to be a big problem. Would be ok if they sealed it.’
Several members of a Facebook renters group said the space looked like a “fire hazard”.
Others criticized young tenants for being too picky and suggested the price and conditions were acceptable.
‘Bloody hell. It includes everything,” reads one comment.
“A couple living together for $350 a week is pretty good and cheap. Boy, that’s called sacrifice.”
But that didn’t sit well with younger users, who cautioned that their generation shouldn’t be forced to sacrifice basic living standards and called the older commenter a “boomer.”
The heated debate comes as the nation grapples with an ongoing housing crisis, with vacancy rates at all-time lows and significant price increases.
Several members of a Facebook renters’ group claimed the space may be illegal and a “fire hazard.”
