“I am blessed to have a great support team with my wife Jennifer and numerous friends and family including the Steube puppies!” the Florida congressman tweeted. “Grateful for all prayers and well wishes as I recover from a fractured pelvis, punctured lung and multiple torn ligaments in my neck.”

He attached to the tweet a picture of himself resting at home – with two of his dogs on his lap and another looking at him from the ground – with a neck brace clearly visible.

“While I will be on hiatus in Sarasota for several weeks, I will perform as many of my congressional duties as I can, and our DC and district staff remain standing by to support Floridians in FL-17,” he added. “I look forward to returning to my colleagues in Washington as soon as possible!”

Steube revealed he suffered a fractured pelvis, a punctured lung and multiple torn ligaments in his neck when he fell 25 feet off a ladder last week while “cutting tree branches.”

On Jan. 18, Steube fell off a ladder while “cutting branches,” his office said.

He spent the night in intensive care, but his office considered his injuries “not life-threatening at this time”.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he spoke to Steube and his wife Jen the day after the accident.

McCarthy said he informed Steube that he would serve on the new House Republican select subcommittee on arming the federal government, adding, “He’s eager to get back to work!”

But Steube will be barred from voting on any issues while he recovers from his injuries at his Florida home.

The new Republican majority abolished proxy voting as part of the rule package the panel passed after the dramatic speaking race, which McCarthy eventually won.

Proxy voting was established by Democrats under House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce foot traffic to the House of Representatives and also allow members who are ill or exposed to continue voting and attend committee hearings Zoom .

Now both options are gone.

House Republicans responded to their base, voters largely opposed to COVID-19 safety protocols, by scrapping all work-from-home options for members of Congress.
