HBO’s ‘The Last Of Us’ Makes ‘Halo’ Fans Wonder What Could Have Been

The Last of Us has gone so well that it’s actually brought up a pain point for a rival fanbase, and we’re seeing many people lament what could have been with Paramount Plus’s Halo show, if only those making it had decided to stick even a little bit close to the source material

Editor Then there’s the show’s odd obsession with nudity, including seeing Master Chief himself naked at one point.Jan 19, 2023, 7:11 PM UTC | Share this story Twitter headquarters in San Francisco, California, US, on Tuesday, November 29th, 2022.Play from 00:00 iFrame codeEventually, this progresses to a sex scene between Master Chief and a (human) Covenant spy while Cortana watches on the monitors, a sequence that was memed on endlessly after it aired. Then there are less goofy changes to the source material, but still incredibly bizarre decisions, like the show setting up new character Kwan as a companion to Master Chief, only to immediately separate them and give her a distinct storyline that does not connect in a meaningful way to Chief again, and is not enjoyable to watch. And outright climate denialism exploded on Twitter in 2022, according to the analysis published today by a coalition of environmental groups and researchers. While it’s true that you will likely have to make some source material sacrifices when adapting a game, there’s a difference between things The Last of Us is doing, like changing spore transfusion of the virus so everyone doesn’t have to wear gas masks onscreen all the time, and doing whatever Halo did here, wildly changing lore and crafting storylines that barely come anywhere close to the original games. The one good thing about the Halo show so far is probably Cortana, and surprise, it’s because they used the original actress from the games. Those ads disparage the transition to clean energy that’s necessary to slow climate change, the report says, while portraying oil and gas companies as unlikely environmental champions. You may be able to argue that Halo’s problems are about more than just staying faithful to the source, that Halo just doesn’t have the budget or production value of The Last of Us either.Download an app to send messages to this love not box.

And yet this is a bad example in this case, given that Halo fans can point to the 2012 live action miniseries Forward Unto Dawn as a successful way to tell a Halo story with an even smaller budget, mainly because it was well-written and stayed true to what we knew about the Halo universe. The findings show “a stark comeback for climate denial” and “negligence from Big Tech companies who not only continue to monetize and enable, but in some cases actively recommend, such content to users,” the report says. The new, drastically more expensive series does not do that.I’ve seen some hopes among fans that Halo writers will take lessons from The Last of Us to heart and stick closer to the source material in the future.“Negligence from Big Tech companies who not only continue to monetize and enable, but in some cases actively recommend, such content to users” The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), a think tank funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that tackles extremism and disinformation, was the lead author of the report.Given that Halo season 1 ended with Cortana effectively remote-piloting Master Chief’s corpse, I do not have a lot of faith that’s going to happen in season 2.But we’ll see.It scrutinizes 850 advertisers on Meta’s Facebook and Instagram between September 1st and November 23rd.
