Kollam: A viral video from Kerala showed a huge brawl between two groups donning international football jerseys. The incident reportedly happened during a road show conducted for the promotion of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Kollam district on Sunday.
It was a dispute between Argentina and Brazil supporters that snowballed into a violent fight at Kollam’s Sakthikulangara, local media reported. The viral video showed youngsters exchanging blows and using sticks and pipes with the national flags of World Cup participants tied on to attack each other. More people donning football jerseys tried to separate and pacify the violent crowd, the video that lasted over a minute showed.
Roadshows and vehicle rallies are popular in Kerala ahead of inauguration ceremonies, political campaigns, promotional events and the like. On Sunday, locals of Sakthiulanhgara came together to take out a roadshow ahead of the beginning of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
As the roadshow reached a cemetery, an argument broke out between fans of Argentina and Brazil, which later escalated into a huge fight. The local police had earlier informed that a case was not registered as there was no complaint from either side. However, after the videos surfaced on the internet, the police had a change of mind, Mathrubhumi said in a report. The police were stunned by the intensity of the violent clash, the news report said.
Earlier, 22 men were arrested for hurling stones at a police party during a World Cup rally in the border district of Palakkad.
