New Delhi: The Delhi State Election Commission (DSEC) has issued details of candidates contesting for the city’s Municipal Corporation polls. It informed that a total of 1,349 candidates are in the run, including 382 independents, with 709 women and 640 men running for the post of councillors in 250 wards. The major contenders – BJP, AAP, and Congress – have fielded more women candidates than men for the MCD polls. The Aam Aadmi Party has the largest number of women candidates at 140, followed by the BJP and Congress at 137 and 134 candidates, respectively.

In the MCD polls, 50 per cent or 125 wards are reserved for women.

The AAP and BJP have fielded candidates in all 250 wards. However, the nominations of three Congress contenders were cancelled due to technicalities. Hence, the party will now contest in 247 wards, instead of 250.

The nominations of the three Congress candidates were rejected due to several reasons like incomplete nomination forms, incomplete section of proposers, missing affidavits, multiple nominations, covering candidates, non-submission of valid caste certificate, incomplete or invalid forms and no security deposit, informed the Delhi State Election Commission.

The Delhi MCD polls are scheduled to be held on December 4. The counting of votes will take place on December 7. This is the first election of the Delhi MCD since its reunification in May this year.
