Masik Shivratri is celebrated on the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi Tithi (the fourteenth day during the waning phase of the Lunar fortnight). This day marks the first appearance of Lord Shiva in the form of a Linga. Moreover, it is said to be the Tithi when Lord Shiva tied the nuptial knot with Devi Parvati. Therefore, Masik Shivratri also commemorates the day when the celestial wedding took place.And today, on the Chaturdashi Tithi, Margashirsha Krishna Paksha (as per the Purnimant calendar) and Chaturdashi Tithi Kartik Krishna Paksha (as per the Amavasyant calendar), devotees shall observe a day-long fast and perform Shiv Puja at midnight (Nishita Kaal).

From the spiritual perspective, Shiva represents Purusha (mindfulness) while Parvati signifies Prakriti (Nature). Therefore, pay tributes to Mahadev and his Shakti by performing puja. Read on to know Shiva puja shubh muhurat and the sampurna vidhi.

The Shiva puja shubh muhurat is between 11:41 PM on November 22 to 12:34 AM on November 23.

However, those who cannot perform the puja at midnight may do it during the following Muhurat:

Abhijeet Muhurat – 11:46 AM to 12:28 PM

Vijay Muhurat – 1:53 PM to 2:35 PM

Godhuli Muhurat – 5:25 PM to 5:52 PM

Bathe before performing the puja and wear clean clothes.

Masik Shivratri Puja Vidhi

Cleanse the Puja room with a few drops of Gangajal.Place an idol or photo of Shiv Ji or a Shiv Linga on a small brass/silver or earthen tray if you wish to do the Abhishek.Cover the wooden chowki with a piece of white cloth and make a small seat by spreading raw rice in the centre.Close your eyes, fold your hands and think of the Sankalpam (connect with your heart’s deepest desire that you wish to see getting manifested).Invoke Lord Shiva and begin the puja by performing the abhishekam of the Shiva Lingam or the idol of Lord Shiva. The order is as follows: Water, Gangajal, milk, honey, ghee, curd and water.Wipe the idol with a fresh piece of cloth and carefully place it over the seat made of rice on the chowki.Light an oil or ghee lamp and place it to the right of the deity.Chant ‘OM Namah Shivaya’Offer the other piece of fresh cloth to the deityApply chandan and offer the Janeyu.Light an incense stick.Subsequently, offer the vilva leaves, datura flowers and fruits and madar flowers etc.Chant the Shiva Mantras.Offer NaivedhyaConclude the puja by singing the Shiva Aarti and offering salutations with ignited camphor.
