First and foremost, let us look at the meaning/definition of education itself. Education could be defined as the attempt geared towards shaping and or modifying behavior of an individual with a view to equip him/her with desirable skills, habits and attitudes to adequately adjust to the communal life and contribute effectively to its growth and preservation.
In other words, education is this process that brings about personal development that will be of great benefit both to the educated (the person receiving the education), and the society at large.
According to Fafunwa (1974) education is “the aggregate of all the processes through which a child develops abilities attitudes and other forms of behaviors which are of value to society”.
From the definition, it can be deduced that education is a process, and that it brings about positive changes, in human life. The changes involve behavioral/attitudinal, reasoning to achieve the set or targeted goal.
Therefore through education one is enlightened and equipped with broader knowledge of self and society and the transference of such from generation to generation.
With regards to the definition of education above, one cannot say it is a time wasting venture in Nigeria or anywhere else. Whatsoever that one does to develop or equip self is never a time-wasting venture.
